THE BUZZ: THIS WEEK'S HOT STORY

Say, was that the fiscal cliff we fell over?

Saturday, March 2, 2013 - 12:01 am

Oh, dear God in Heaven! Those idiots in Washington actually went and allowed the sequester to happen! We’ve gone over the fiscal cliff, and there’s no turning back! Government services will be slashed to the bone, and we’re all doomed!

Actually, not so much. After discovering that congressional Republicans weren’t going to cave on tax increases, President Obama had to scale back his doom-and-gloom predictions. Perhaps old people wouldn’t really be thrown into the streets and killers wouldn’t really be released from prison and jets wouldn’t crash into the ground for lack of air traffic controllers. Americans “might not notice any changes” for the first week, or maybe even the first month. Bluff called.

How can there be any drastic changes when the sequester’s across-the-board spending cuts aren’t really cuts at all? They represent a slight drop in proposed spending increases. Even with the sequester, the government will spend more this year than it did last year and more next year than it will this year. In what rational universe is that a “cut”? If there is such hysteria over this modest scaling back, how would we react to a real cut, or even holding spending at the same level?

Perhaps we will find out. If the predicted chaos from the sequester doesn’t happen – and there’s no early reason it should – perhaps the American people will finally realize they have let government get away from them.

These are troubling times. The government is blatantly lying to its citizens, and the cheerleading press is dutifully complicit. Even more than fiscal sanity, we could use a little honesty.
