Bruins show unselfish, calm play equals success

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 11:09 pm
Northrop High School boy's basketball coach Barak Coolman spoke with The News-Sentinel following his team's win against Carroll in the IHSAA Class 4A Sectional 5 on Tuesday. In their words: Northrop coach Barak Coolman

We played really unselfish the second half and our guys have a lot of confidence. We have been through some pretty big trials over the last month and they have persevered through that and I think its made us better. We came up on the short end of some losses in February but through the grind we got better and continued to remind ourselves what we need to do to be successful and share the ball. When we make the extra pass and spread things out, it is really hard to defend us.You just know when you have seniors playing their first sectional game, it is just a different feel. So it’s great to get that under our belt. You have to give credit to Carroll for their game plan. They come out, slowed things down and made us really kind of chase. It was just kind of the emotions of that first sectional game. We weathered that storm - we kind of knew we would - and we did it better than we thought we would to be able to go into the second half with a one-point lead.I think we just wore them out. The fatigue factor started playing into the game, we started getting up and down and their shots didn’t fall as well. We defend and pressure and it makes it hard on the legs come that fourth quarter and I think that’s what it really came down to. You had some fatigue turnovers out of Carroll and we were able to get some easy buckets and run out. Give our kids credit just for being able to kind of weather that storm and say, ‘You know what, it’s a 32-minute game, it’s not the first quarter.’We are definitely excited about the opportunity. North Side beat us and they beat us fair and square, so it is one of those things where they earned the SAC title. We had our opportunity. It’s not a revenge thing, it’s about sectionals now and so we are going to play a good team and have to play well to beat them.
