Boiler coach liked team's rhythm shots on Sunday

Monday, February 25, 2013 - 12:01 am

WEST LAFAYETTE - Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter spoke with the media following the Boilermakers' 74-43 victory over Northwestern at Mackey Arena on Sunday.

On Purdue's offensive flow:

"I thought our guys took more shots in rhythm today. That really pays off. Anytime that we have poor stretches in the (past) games, its because we were casual or took shots out of rhythm."

On his team's improved effort:

"I thought that our effort was better and that showed on the glass, chasing down long rebounds and getting loose balls. That is important for any team, but especially this team."

On his team's play this season:

"We're inconsistent as a team. When you have a record like we do (13-14) that is what you get. Until you can show that consistency, you aren;t going to be able to string some wins together. And we are in a very difficult league, obviously, with a very inconsistent team. Today, I thought we played a lot stronger and a lot harder."

On focusing on Purdue's post play:

"It shrinks the defense if you can get the basketball inside. It always helps to be able to play inside-outside. To get an inside presence with both (Sandi Marcius and A.J. Hammons) always helps us, but especially against a zone (defense), because then they have to worry about those guys."

On the play of freshman center A.J. Hammons

"We've got to get A.J. to be consistent. We have a really good post player, once he begins to realize what he does on a daily basis is going to help him in his games. The last couple of games, (Hammons) just didn't play as hard as Sandi did, especially in the Indiana game. We've got to get him to understand how important it is on a daily basis. He's trying to play hard on Wednesdays and Saturday nights. You've got to play hard every single day, then that takes care of itself.
