Man sentenced to 15 years for hammer attack on estranged wife

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 4:04 pm

A man who was accused of beating his wife in the head with a hammer was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday in Allen Superior Court.

Raul H. Garcia, 69, originally had been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery committed by means of a deadly weapon, strangulation and criminal recklessness. However, he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery, and the state dropped the other charges as part of a plea agreement.

According to court documents, Garcia attacked his estranged wife on July 8, 2012, trying to strangle her and then hitting her in the head with a hammer an undetermined number of times.

Garcia was given 218 days' credit for time already served in jail after his arrest on those charges.
