Man sentenced to 15 years for hammer attack on estranged wife

A man who was accused of beating his wife in the head with a hammer was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday in Allen Superior Court.Raul H. Garcia, 69, originally had been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery committed by means of a deadly weapon, strangulation and criminal recklessness. However, he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery, and the state dropped the other charges as part of a plea agreement.

According to court documents, Garcia attacked his estranged wife on July 8, 2012, trying to strangle her and then hitting her in the head with a hammer an undetermined number of times.

Garcia was given 218 days' credit for time already served in jail after his arrest on those charges.
