New Haven earned a critical boy's basketball victory over Northeast Hoosier Conference power Homestead on Saturday.
Bulldog coach Al Gooden spoke with the News-Sentinel following the game about the victory.
On what this means after early season struggles:
We went through a 3-game losing streak, but we have a good team. We got beat (by) some tough, quality teams down there in Indianapolis, and DeKalb, tip your head, they beat us, but that's alright, we had a good shot at the end of the game to win. I think they are coming around nicely. They kept playing hard together as a team and that's what's getting us through.
On overcoming Steve McElvene going to the bench with four fouls:
Lacy (Curry) was starting for us in the start of the year. Lacy's a senior, why can't he do the job? Hey, we need subs, so Lacy came in and did his job.
On three players besides VJ Beachem being in double figures:
That's not my problem. Let other people keep worrying about VJ. We have had four guys in double figures all year long. Let them worry about VJ (and) don't worry about them other four guys. We'll be alright.
On hitting 11 straight free throws to finish the game:
Those kids, VJ, Jordan Hall, Monte and Jabar stepped up and knocked some free throws down, and that's what won. All the time, pressure all the time, we tell them, we take turns taking pressure with each other. We did a good job tonight.
On the game against East Noble Thursday to clinch a share of the NHC:
We need to sit down and play defense, as always. We aren’t going to change nothing, we’ll change nothing. Just sit down and play defense all the way through.
