National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day will take place Thursday, a day set aside for more than a decade to encourage African Americans to “Get Educated, Get Tested, Get Treated, and Get Involved with HIV/AIDS.”
Lisa Terry, AIDS Task Force executive director, challenged local African Americans to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS by wearing red and participating in a photo opportunity at 2 p.m. Saturday at the African/African-American Historical Museum, 436 E. Douglas Ave.
African Americans represent about 14 percent of the U.S. population, but they account for 44 percent of new HIV infection and have a shorter survival time after AIDS diagnosis than most other racial or ethnic groups, a news release from the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana said.
