GARY — Gary police says 2 burglary suspects have died and a third has been critically injured in a high-speed chase while fleeing officers.
Police estimated the fleeing car reached speeds of 90 mph Wednesday morning before the car struck a tree, spun and struck a second tree with such force that front end of the car wrapped around the tree.
The Post-Tribune reports the steering wheel impaled the driver's chest and that he and a back-seat passenger died at the scene. A front-seat passenger was airlifted to a Chicago hospital.
None of the three were immediately identified.
Gary firefighters and Lake County deputy coroners worked for almost three hours to extricate the two bodies from the mangled metal.
