Coltin J. Steele of Ossian, a student at Norwell High School, recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America organization.
Steele is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Troop 76 in Adams County, a news release said. While working toward the requirements for Eagle Scout, he performed community service work and provided leadership and service for his troop, for which he currently serves as program manager.
For his Eagle Scout project, Steele coordinated the reconditioning in July of the Outdoor Science Lab at Ossian Elementary School, the news release said.
The project was designed to help students understand more about the environment and its effect on our everyday lives, while also allowing them to observe the basics of plant growth and to view birds, the news release said.
Steele's volunteer crew built a pumpkin trellis, laid down new mulch on the walking paths, restructured the plant area with a retaining wall, and built several birdhouses and feeders that were placed around the lab area, the news release said.
His project received support from local businesses such as Walmart, Gene Donaghy's Nursery of Ossian and Yoder's Nursery of Bluffton.
