Shopping column: Old items find fresh use at Junk Pile Style

New business sells woman's creatively repurposed items and hand-painted furniture.

Friday, January 18, 2013 - 12:01 am

If you like creatively repurposed and recycled items for the home, you may want to plan a visit to Junk Pile Style, a little business Diann Getty runs out of her home at 10607 Leo Road.

Getty made custom slipcovers in her sewing room off the end of her house until she retired three years ago.

“Not being one to sit around, I began filling it with hand-painted things, refurbished clothing … repurposed lamps, etc.” she said in an email.

Now she has a room full of repurposed items and collectibles for sale. Some examples of her creativity: She put short legs on half of a vintage suitcase, put a big washable pillow inside and turned it into a dog bed. She and her husband converted a chicken crate into a coffee table.

Her husband refashioned a headboard and footboard into a bench. Getty filled a big conch shell with dirt and planted succulents inside.

She also has hand-painted furniture and jackets that have been embellished. She's crafted gourds into artwork. She glued and sealed a puzzle onto a tabletop.

In addition, Getty sells some collectible pieces.

Her shop is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, or by appointment. Phone: 433-9806.

In case you hadn't heard …

… a new sporting goods shop is coming to Glenbrook Commons later this year. The News-Sentinel reported earlier this week a Dunham's Sports store will occupy 66,000 square feet in the shopping center. Dunham's already has stores in the area, in Angola, Auburn, Wabash and Warsaw, among other Indiana locations.

The store sells exercise equipment, sports equipment from baseball to volleyball, footwear, jackets and outdoor wear, fishing, hunting, archery, camping and hiking equipment, and more.

Check out Dunham's website at www.dunhamssports.com.

Gift idea for a new mom

“We had a number of customer requests and now we have 'Chewbeads,'” says Sara Keltsch at the Monogram Shoppe and more ... in Covington Plaza, 6410 W. Jefferson Blvd.

She describes them as “a fashionable teething jewelry in necklaces and bracelets made of 100 percent silicone similar to pacifiers. Moms wear the necklaces, and the babies can chew on them. We have black, brown, purple, pink and ivory necklaces and many bracelet colors.”

They can be cleaned with soap and water and are dishwasher safe — and they're cute. Check out the website at www.chewbeads.com.

The Monogram Shoppe is selling the necklaces for $29.95 and the bracelets, which come in sets of three, for $19.95.
