During this past football season, Ball State threw the ball 492 times. That apparently was music to Shug Oyegunle’s ears.
The Gaither (Tampa, Fla.) High School senior wide receiver recently committed to play football for the Cardinals this coming fall.
"I took a visit last week and I loved it, the atmosphere," Oyegunle told the Bright House Sports Network recently. "It's great for me, a perfect fit."
Ball State has won 15 games in the past two seasons under coach Pete Lembo and they’ve developed the reputation as an exciting offensive squad to not just watch, but to play in.
"(They'll use me) as a slot receiver,” Gaither said. “They mostly run the spread."
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete had received a dozen offers, including one earlier this week from in-state Florida International. However, a visit from Cardinal wide receiver coach Keith Gaither solidified Oyegunle’s mind.
"Coach (Keith) Gaither actually came to my house this morning to polish things up," Oyegunle said. "He has been there for a while, and he's been keeping it real. I felt it was a good fit for me."
The Tampa area has been a productive one for Ball State. The current Cardinal coaches began to develop recruiting relationships in the area while they were at Elon University, and that continued two seasons ago when the took over in Muncie.
Ball State has five players from the state of Florida. Oyegunle is the 19th athlete to pledge to Ball State in the 2013 class.
"Next week, (FIU) wanted me to visit there," Oyegunle said. "I knew if I waited, my opportunity for Ball State would have probably been given up. I didn't want to lose that because it was such a good fit for me. I didn't even want to waste my time."
