Snider defensive lineman Weston Painter and his interception return for a touchdown in the postseason is the inaugural recipient of The News-Sentinel High School Football Play of the Year.

The Play of the Year recognized the best plays from Fort Wayne area teams and players during the 2012 season and gave fans the chance to determine the winner through online voting on the newspaper's website.

Painter's 65-yard interception return against Homestead in the sectional quarterfinals received 357 votes and 42.15 percent of the total vote to win Play of the Year honors. That touchdown run also helped Snider defeat Homestead 30-20 and began the Panthers' postseason run that would end with the team reaching the IHSAA Class 5A state finals for the first time since 2004.

The Painter touchdown run was one of seven finalists selected by The News-Sentinel sports staff for Play of the Year. Bishop Dwenger's hitch-and-pitch lateral that resulted in a touchdown finished in second place receiving 29.52 percent of the vote.

This was the second high school football award The News-Sentinel presented this season that was solely determined by the fans through online voting.

Bishop Luers senior and Notre Dame recruit Jaylon Smith in October received more than 25,000 votes to be named The News-Sentinel High School Football Fan Choice Player of the Year.
