Friday, November 16, 2012 - 4:11 pm

IPFW outside attacker Emily Spencer was awarded the Summit League's top individual honor

The conference announced Thursday night that Spencer was named the Summit League Player of the Year.

Spencer finished the regular season leading the Summit League with 468 kills and was in the nation's top 40 with a 4.25 kills per game average. She also had a conference-best 30 aces.

Spencer becomes the first IPFW player since the program joined the Summit League to be named Player of the Year. The Mastodons while a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference won player of the year honors four times with the last one coming in 2000.

This is the second consecutive year that Spencer earned a top individual award from the conference. The sophomore last season was named the 2011 Summit League Freshman of the Year.

With Spencer leading the offense, IPFW finished in second place in the Summit League and received a berth to the four-team Summit League Tournament.

IPFW will play Oakland in the conference tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.
