Health briefs: Learn about overcoming abuse, being a male caregiver

Overcoming abuse

Sixth annual “Breaking Through The Silence: The Noise of Overcoming an Abusive Situation” Lecture will be noon-1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Walb Student Union Ballroom, 2101 E. Coliseum Blvd. Speaker will be Chris Garrett, department of labor grant coordinator and project coordinator for Ivy Tech Corporate College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In addition after Garrett's speech, a resource fair will be held featuring agencies that serve victims of domestic abuse.

Male caregivers workshops

Aging & In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana will host workshops for male caregivers at 10-11 a.m. or 5-6 p.m. Wednesday at ifs campus, 3003 Lake Ave. Attendees will receive “Men as Caregivers” pamphlets and “Seniors and their Caregivers” personal health records. The event is free.

Infant health

“Health Baby, Healthy You” baby shower will begin with registration at 4:30-5:15 p.m. Thursday at Renaissance Pointe YMCA, 2323 Bowser Ave. Information sessions on a variety of topics will be offered along with enrollment assistance for health-care plans. Transportation is free for MDwise members. To schedule transportation, call 1-800-356-1204 at least two days in advance. Guests will receive child-related gift items and be provided a light dinner. The event is free.

Open house

IPFW College of Health and Human Services will hold a Taste of CHHS Open House at 2-5 p.m. Friday, in Neff Hall, 2101 E. Coliseum Blvd. Events include tours of the department of nursing, the radiography and dental labs. Light refreshments will be available. A canned food item donation to the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana will be appreciated. The event is free and open to the public.

ADHD/ADD support

Remember loved ones

Fourth annual Remembrance Tree at Lutheran Hospital invites the public to place a personalized ornament on the tree at 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 17. A special dedication will take place in the hospital's main lobby at 12:45 p.m. The names of loved ones will be read at that time. Volunteers will paint a family member or friend's name on the free ornaments. Special ornaments will be available in memory of fallen heroes from the armed forces, fire department or police department.
