Artist spotlight

You can meet Allen County artist Mary Coons and see some of her work during a reception and open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Door West store, 14513-B Indiana 1 in Leo-Cedarville.

Coons has loved drawing since age 4, and early on developed a love for drawing houses and buildings, a news release said. She has drawn more than 450 home portraits in the past 10 years.

Coons, who moved to Fort Wayne six years ago, began her art career doing sign painting and children's graphics in the 1970s, the news release said.

She also spent two decades working in art education field and doing biblical illustrations for national publications.

House portraits became a cottage industry for her after she began doing them in 1991, the news release said.

Coons believes the art medium is the perfect way to commemorate your home, personal achievements or the accomplishments of loved ones, the news release said.

Coons' appearance is one of a series of spotlights on Allen County artists held by Katherine Cassidy, owner of Red Door West.
