Wednesday, October 31, 2012 - 12:01 am

Candy collection for troops

Children are invited to share their Halloween candy with U.S. military personnel through Operation Troop Treats.

Youngsters can bring their candy to the Kool Smiles dental office, 1852 Bluffton Road in Foster Park Plaza), and exchange it for a toy, a news release said. The candy collection will take place during the office's regular hours 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Each child can receive a toy for every 25 pieces of candy donated, the news release said. Candy should be left in its original packaging. Toys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is a limit of three toys per child.

The candy will be included in care packages sent by the Operation Gratitude program to U.S. troops serving overseas, the news release said. Kool Smiles will pay to ship the candy to Operation Gratitude, as well as donate toothbrushes and toothpaste for the care packages.

Cancer benefit

Local beauty industry professionals will hold a Cut-A-Thon from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday to raise money for Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and salon owner Allison Stier, who has bilateral inflammatory breast cancer.

The event will take place at Studio Eclipse Salon and adjoining businesses on the east side of Pine Valley Mall at Coldwater and Dupont roads. For a donation, people can receive a haircut, clear color gloss treatment, conditioning treatment, temporary pink chalk streaks, nail polishing or a massage.
