NEW YORK — An artist setting up a public display featuring an "I Love New York" theme was arrested after someone called the bomb squad.

The caller reported a suspicious package attached to a tree early Saturday. Police found Takeshi Miyakawa standing on a ladder with a plastic box, wires, a plastic bag and a battery.

The New York Times says bags stamped with an "I heart NY" logo were to be illuminated with LED lights.

Miyakawa's friend, Louis Lim, says the "positive message" was to coincide with a design festival.

Miyakawa was arraigned Sunday on charges of reckless endangerment and placing "a false bomb or hazardous substance."

His lawyer, Deborah J. Blum, says the artist was ordered held pending a psychological exam. She calls it a "gross misunderstanding."
