Prima donnas deserve days off, too, you know

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - 5:03 am

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett missed a start because of a sore back then went golfing on his day off. He was heavily criticized, but let's give the guy a break: It was way too nice to go bowling.

Taking a bite out of the Big Apple

Tim Tebow changed his dog's name from Bronco to Bronx to reflect his move to New York City. He was also thoughtful enough to build an extra doghouse for Mark Sanchez, just in case he needs one sometime next season.

Stern flips over floppers

NBA Commissioner David Stern says he will look into the issue of “flopping” and whether to punish it more severely to improve the game. If Stern outlaws flopping, will Brian Cardinal be grandfathered in?

Chad glad to lend support

New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco posted an open letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell offering his support. The letter ends speculation that Ochocinco had been silenced as part of a Catchless Protection Program.

Another sentinmental holiday

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora tweeted “Happy Mother's Day LeSean McCoy! Enjoy your special day!!” continuing an ongoing spat with McCoy, the Eagles running back. This is just like the old West, except they duel at 140 characters instead of 40 paces.

"Matheny, the manager wants to see you!"

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny fines players or coaches who are not on the top step of the dugout for the ntional anthem and has twice had to fine himself. In fact, he felt so bad about the violation, he had trouble looking himself in the eyes in the clubhouse mirror.

Slugger, Texas Ranger

Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton hit his 18th home run earlier in the season than Barry Bonds did during his 73-homer season or Mark McGwire did during his 70-home run season. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: I sure hope Hamilton is able to avoid getting a big head.
