Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - 5:11 pm

Several houses were evacuated as a precaution Tuesday afternoon after a 6-inch gas line was struck at the intersection of St. Joe Center and Maplecrest roads, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

According to a release from the fire department: it was called to the 5400 block of St. Joe Center at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. FWFD monitors are not detecting compromised air quality. The houses that have been evacuated are just west of the intersection at the recommendation of the gas company, NIPSCO. St. Joseph Central Elementary is in the area and Fort Wayne Community Schools' transportation department was notified to help reroute buses and to ensure awareness of the situation.

The fire department remains on the scene. The intersection remains closed until further notice.
