Fort Wayne pedestrian killed by truck is identified

Alfonso Lemus, 44, died Sunday morning in incident on Hessen Cassel

Monday, May 14, 2012 - 1:44 pm

The identity has been released of a man who died Sunday morning in a traffic incident where investigators believe a truck left a roadway and struck him.

Alfonso Lemus, 44, from Fort Wayne, is ruled to have died from blunt force trauma due to a pedestrian vs. motor vehicle crash, according to a news release from the Allen County Coroner's Office. Lemus' death is the 11th from a fatal crash in Allen County this year.

Lemus died in the 6200 block of Hessen Cassel Road, according to information released earlier by the Fort Wayne Police Department. Officers from the department were dispatched around 8:39 a.m. Sunday to the 6200 block of Hessen Cassel to investigate a report of a pedestrian being struck.

Responders found a man, Lemus, who was unresponsive in grass on the west side of the road; medics declared the man deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicated Lemus was walking on the west side of Hessen Cassel when a Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling north entered the 6200 block of Hessen Cassel, according to the release. The driver of the truck apparently fell asleep at the wheel and the vehicle left the road, striking Lemus, the release said.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the incident and no arrest has been made, the release said.
