Local student wins state American Mothers essay contest

Saturday, May 12, 2012 - 12:01 am

The Indiana Association of American Mothers has selected Marcus Leach of Fort Wayne as the Indiana winner of the organization's 2012 5th Grade Essay Contest.

Marcus is the son of Matthew and Pamela Leach of Fort Wayne and attends St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, a news release said.

Students wrote on the topic “What My Mother Means To Me.”

Marcus wrote that his mother is “always looking out for me and helping me to make the right choices. … My mother is my solid ground in the earthquake of life. Whenever I need her, she is always there, eager to guide me through my troubles.”

Second place award went to Isaac Dunifon, son of Renee Dunifon and Martin Dunifon of Fort Wayne. He is a student at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Fort Wayne.

American Mothers conducts the essay contest each year for fifth-graders nationwide, a news release said. State winners advance to national judging, which this year was done by the English department at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne.

A national winner was selected at the group's recent national convention in Washington, D.C.

American Mothers also sponsors awards for Mother of the Year, Young Mother of the Year, and Mother of Achievement. For more information or to send nominations, go to www.americanmothers.org.
