Just four days from the Republican primary between U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar and his challenger, Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock, an independent poll showed the tea party-backed Mourdock leading by 10 percentage points.
The Indiana Battleground Poll, commissioned by Howey Politics Indiana and DePauw University, showed Mourdock with 48 percent of likely primary voters to Lugar’s 38 percent.
Commentator Brian Howey moved the race into the “likely Mourdock” category Friday, just a month after another Howey-DePauw poll found Lugar ahead by seven points.
The poll includes “leaners” who could change their minds before May 8, but Mourdock still led Lugar by eight points even with the possible lean Howey wrote in an analysis of the poll.
The survey, conducted Monday and Tuesday, was based on 700 likely voters with a margin for error of about 3.7 percent.
