Have you visited the giraffe exhibit this year? If so, you've noticed that the feeding platform has doubled in size, allowing more room for people and hungry giraffes. This huge improvement was made possible by a $125,000 gift from the Ron Venderly Family Foundation.
"We were pleased to help the zoo expand something so popular," said Ron Venderly. "The setting for this exhibit is just gorgeous."
According to Joan Venderly, Ron's wife, the zoo has been a part of their family tradition for 48 years.
"When I look at the kids (enjoying the giraffes), I realize how important this is," she said. "The zoo has always been one of our favorite places."
More than 150,000 people have fed the giraffes from the platform since the African Journey opened in 2009.
The project also included a new boardwalk segment that allows zoo guests to bypass the Giraffe Feeding Platform if they wish.
"We are truly grateful to the Ron Venderly Family Foundation for their generous gift," said Zoo Director Jim Anderson.
The zoo receives no tax funding for operations, and all improvements are paid for with donations from individuals, businesses and foundations. Thank you to the Venderly family for supporting the zoo.
