Calling all Santa's Helpers

Are you one of “Santa's Helpers” - that elite group that dons the red suit and white beard for parties and local businesses?

If you would like to participate in the sixth annual Phil Steigerwald Santa's Helper contest, contact Natalia Bethea at The News-Sentinel at 461-8439 by Nov. 16 and leave your name and phone number.

A Santa's Helper who wins three years in a row must sit out one year, so three-time winner Kip Lackey will not compete this year.

Nurse may have had swine flu

EVANSVILLE — An Evansville hospital is awaiting tests to confirm whether a nurse who died was ill with swine flu.

Danna Fortune, 53, of Boonville, died Friday at St. Mary's Medical Center, more than a week after being admitted with flu-like symptoms.

Hospital spokesman Rick Peltier tells the Evansville Courier & Press there are no indications Fortune had been in contact with any patients hospitalized with swine flu. She was a nurse in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit.

Man dies in crash

BLOOMINGTON — Police say an all-terrain vehicle crashed in southern Indiana, killing an 18-year-old Bloomington man.

Monroe County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Todd Cohee says the ATV left the right side of the road on a curve and struck a railroad sign and a tree on a county road just north of Indiana 45 near Bloomington on Saturday. The driver was thrown off and landed on the road. He wasn't wearing a helmet.

He was taken to a hospital in Bloomington, where he was pronounced dead.

Call for better data on violence

INDIANAPOLIS — A sexual violence prevention plan put together by the Indiana State Department of Health is calling for better data collection on acts of sexual violence.

The plan sets six goals with multiple outcomes that the Health Department hopes to achieve within five years. Among those goals are including key demographic groups in state and local efforts to prevent sexual violence and providing technical assistance to prevention programs.

The agency released parts of the plan at a meeting last week in Indianapolis.
